ESG – Endoscopic Sleeve GastroplastyConveniently located to serve Fountain Valley, CA

Thanks to the expert team at Smart Dimensions, many men and women have achieved their ideal weight with an endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty in Orange County. An endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is an incision-less procedure that decreases the size of your stomach. This minimally invasive treatment can be a great option for people who have attempted to diet and exercise for weight loss but are not seeing results.

What Is Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty?

ESG, or endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, is an advanced, non-surgical weight loss treatment. The procedure is performed using an endoscopic suturing device that is inserted via the throat and then directed down into the stomach. Our surgeons will then expertly place sutures in the stomach to reduce its size and help to limit your food intake.

Although the procedure is very intricate, it associated with significantly fewer complications and risks compared to surgical interventions. ESG also requires less downtime than more invasive weight loss surgeries.

Am I a Good Candidate for Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty?

The best candidates for an endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty are people with a BMI above 30 who have tried all types of diet and exercise but are not losing weight. Candidates must be committed to following healthy eating and exercise habits.

Candidates can be patients who are considered obese and who may not qualify for surgical interventions like traditional bariatric surgery to reach their weight loss goals. Since endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is minimally invasive, it affords many obese patients a safe alternative to weight loss surgery.

Our specialists are highly trained to identify weight loss procedures that align with each patient’s specific health needs. If ESG isn’t right for you, other options will be discussed with you.

The Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Procedure

An endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is an outpatient procedure. General anesthesia will be administered to ensure your comfort during the treatment. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the endoscopic suturing device will be inserted down the throat until it reaches the stomach.

The surgeon will use the camera on the device to navigate within the stomach and place the sutures. Once the suturing process is complete, the endoscopic device will be carefully pulled out of your body. The whole procedure typically takes an hour to an hour and a half.

The Recovery Process

Most patients need about three days to recover after an endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty procedure. Mild nausea and/or stomach pain can occur in the initial days of your recovery, but patients can usually return to work and normal day-to-day activities within five days or less.

It is important to adhere to our surgeon’s instructions regarding dietary restrictions after your treatment. Patients must follow a liquid diet for about two weeks. Soft foods will gradually be reintroduced, and after about five weeks, you will be able to return to a regular diet.

Our surgeon will also advise you on appropriate levels of physical activity at every stage of your recovery. Typically, you can transition from low intensity exercise to moderate intensity over the first few weeks after your procedure. Vigorous exercise should not be resumed until at least one month after ESG.
