Why Do We Find It Difficult to Lose Weight?

When you gain weight the fat cells in the body increase in both volume and size. The more lipids we store in our fat cells, the larger they become.

When your body uses this fat as energy, only a certain portion of the fat cells is used up. But the remaining portion of your fat cells stay as they are. They shrink in size and don’t disappear. In particular, if your fat cells have a higher number of alpha-2 receptors, compared to beta-2 receptors, they become harder to eliminate. This is why they’re called stubborn fat.

Liposuction removes a large number of stubborn fat cells from each area. The amount of fat that will be removed will depend on the volume of fat present in that particular area. In most cases, the post-surgical results are long-lasting if you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. However, it is important to note that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure.

Which Areas Can Be Treated?

This treatment plan is very popular for removing fat from areas like:

  • Chest
  • Flanks
  • Inner Thighs
  • Outer Thighs
  • Upper Arms
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Buttocks

Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

A good liposuction candidate is an adult who is within 30 percent of their ideal weight. You should also have good skin elasticity and a considerably good muscle tone. If you have an underlying medical condition, your chances of being an ideal candidate for liposuction may be affected as well.

It should be noted that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. It isn’t a treatment for people who are overweight or obese. It is simply a procedure for removing excess or unwanted fat and skin tissue so that you can achieve a more toned and contoured body figure.

Preparing for Your Consultation

In particular, liposuction can help you remove unwanted fat from certain areas of the body that do not respond or react well to exercises and weight loss diets. These areas can be stubborn and tricky to treat as most of the exercises for these regions can be ineffective for a variety of reasons.

During his consult, your surgeon identifies the areas that require liposuction and the areas that don’t. Then, we will provide a list of pre-surgical Do’s and Don’ts which you need to follow when coming in for the surgery.

What is the Procedure Like?

If you undergo liposuction, you will be administered anesthesia; this will ensure a comfortable and pain-free procedure. Then, small incisions are made in the target area, from where the excess fat will be removed.

A thin, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted through these tiny incisions, and the excess fat is loosened using a back and forth motion. As a result, the fat is dislodged, making it easier for the surgeon to remove it using a surgical vacuum. The incisions are then stitched together.

I am very pleased with Dr. Russo! Not only did he take excellent care of me but he showed compassion and empathy and kindness and overall support.

Liposuction Recovery

Liposuction is typically an outpatient procedure, meaning patients will be able to return home the day of the procedure without any need for a hospital stay. This may vary depending on the volume of fat that is removed.

Once patients return home, they will need to rest and recover. During your recovery process, it will be vital to follow your surgeon’s post-surgical care directions as closely as possible. This will ensure a comfortable healing process and will minimize the chance of post-surgical complications.

Swelling, bruising, redness, and some pain and discomfort are to be expected after the procedure. There is no need to be alarmed if you experience these for a few days post-procedure. Pain-control medications and antibiotics will be prescribed and must be taken as directed.

Ice packs can be used to aid in reduction of swelling and bruising. Wearing an elastic compression garment helps the skin conform to the area’s new underlying contours, and it also controls swelling.

Depending on which area of your body the surgery was performed on, as well as other individual factors, the recovery period may differ. Patients may need to take some time off from work and avoid physically taxing activities. Once the swelling subsides, you can see the changes in your body.
