I am board certified in general surgery and have been doing bariatric surgery since 1985. I did bariatric surgery in my training as a resident and then continued when I came to California in my private practice. I have done over 3000 cases with very good results, which are tracked through the Center of Excellence process through the American Society of Bariatric Surgery. I became interested in bariatric surgery because of two real reasons: First its very complicated and difficult surgery, which I enjoy doing. I was trained in cancer surgery, which is typical of very complex cases, and then I found that when I did bariatric surgery, I was following the patients for the rest of their lives. So, it was a good combination of not only surgery, but internal medicine where patient becomes someone you see, you see the results, and then you are seeing them for the rest of their lives. So, it’s very gratifying to not only have the outcomes be good but then you see the patients how their life has changed. I see the patients calling me years later saying that I have accomplished going back to school or run a marathon or I went to the beach. I had one couple they just wanted to go to the beach and have not been able to because of their weight, and when they called me years later saying that they are enjoying that, it’s just a great feeling.
