Description
Gastric bypass surgery is typically performed as a laparoscopic procedure at our Orange County and San Bernardino-area bariatric practice. It means that after the patient is sedated, our surgeons will make several small incisions to his or her abdomen and place a place a plastic tube into each opening.

The way the gastric bypass is done is after extensive preoperative evaluation. We bring the outpatient to the operating room, put them under general anesthesia and the overwhelming majority of our patients, I would say about 99%, have the procedure done laparoscopically, which means we make several small incisions and put our camera and instruments inside the patient, insufflate the abdomen with gas to allow us to see inside and use our stapling devices to fashion a pouch and rewrap the intestine to connect to that pouch. Majority of our patients stay in the hospital about two and a half days, sometimes longer depending on their size and underlying medical problems, and then we see them on a regular follow-ups after that.
