The LAP-BAND surgery is a procedure that is performed laparoscopically. Patients do undergo general anesthesia. We make five small incisions in the abdominal wall and through the incisions using video camera and monitor and what we call ports, we can place a silastic band around the top of the stomach. We close the band and we suture the stomach over the band to keep the stomach from slipping. The band is attached to tubing, which is attached to a port that we anchor to the patient's abdominal wall fascia to keep it from slipping or moving and through that ports, we can inject saline with a needle as an office procedure to infuse into the band, which restricts around the top of the stomach. The restriction decreases the amount of food that patients can eat which increases their satiety. The band works well for patients who are self directed, well motivated, and have good coping skills. It does not work well for patients who are essentially looking for a way to cheat or looking for an easy way out.
