Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach acid is regurgitated from the stomach into the esophagus. The symptoms of GERD are uncomfortable: frequent heartburn, hoarseness, sore throat, chronic dry cough, a sensation of a lump in the throat, and chest pain. The increasing prevalence of GERD has lead to the development of several types of treatments. When medicinal treatment has failed to properly manage the symptoms of GERD, there are several surgical options a patient can choose from. Lite & Smart DIMENSIONS™ offers transoral incisionless fundoplication at our Orange County practice, serving Los Angeles and surrounding Southern California communities. Transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) endoscopic treatment repairs a weakened valve at the junction of the stomach and the esophagus, strengthening the anti-reflux barrier so that gastric content no longer seeps into the throat. To accomplish this, an instrument is inserted through the mouth and down the throat to the lower esophageal sphincter; the muscle is then tightened to prevent stomach contents from moving upward. Most patients have to stay in the hospital overnight and are able to return home the following day. After resting for a few days, they are typically able to return to their daily routine and activities.
One of the most notable benefits of TIF is it is a long-term solution to GERD. It corrects the underlying anatomical problems that cause reflux disease and its accompanying symptoms and prevents the progression of the disease. With pharmalogical treatment, reflux medicines (such as the proton pump inhibitors Prilosec® or Prevacid®) will relieve the symptoms, but not fix the root cause of the symptoms or stop the disease's progression. Having the endoscopy will most likely lower the patient's dependency on medications to control the symptoms.
The endoscopy does not require incisions; it's a minimally invasive procedure, which means less risk of complications, reduced pain, and a shorter recovery period. The procedure has a very high success rate and eliminates heartburn and other symptoms of GERD in over 85 percent of patients.
Transoral incisionless fundoplication has been proven to be a safe and effective endoscopic surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease; however, there is the slight risk of some unpleasant post-surgery side effects. A small amount of patients have problems swallowing or belching, and others experience bloating, diarrhea, or some discomfort in the chest, nose, and throat for the first few days after surgery. These side effects usually resolve quickly. You will speak to the surgeon in depth about any risk of complication.
The Lite & Smart DIMENSIONS™ team recommends that you meet with a member of our staff to discuss the procedure during a comprehensive consultation. At that time, we will discuss the cost of transoral incisionless fundoplication. The cost will vary by patient, and it's best to discuss these matters with a surgeon after he or she has reviewed your case and medical history. In general, the overall procedure costs will include surgeon's fees, facility fees, and some follow-up visits.
