For most individuals, obesity is a problem that requires intensive treatment and ongoing support. Currently, there are several different obesity treatments available. By far the most effective has been laparoscopic bariatric (weight loss) surgery. At our Orange County bariatric surgery (weight loss) practice, near Los Angeles, we treat many patients who have tried other methods of losing weight without success or who have lost some weight, only to quickly regain it. Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery (Weight-Loss)

The most effective method for treating morbidly obese patients is laparoscopic bariatric surgery (weight loss). Patients arriving from Los Angeles and other locations frequently ask, “How is laparoscopic bariatric surgery (weight loss) performed?” Laparoscopic obesity surgery, they learn, is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses a laparoscope, essentially a small camera attached to fiber optic cable, to allow the surgeon to perform the surgery without major incisions. Manipulating the camera allows the Smart Dimensions™ surgeon to view the body’s internal structures so that he or she can precisely perform a gastric bypass procedure. Because trauma to the body is relatively slight, post-operative discomfort and recovery time are minimized.

This advanced surgical method is so effective that it has been adopted for procedures other than laparoscopic treatment of obesity. Surgery is now performed in Los Angeles, Orange County, and throughout the world with laparoscopic technology to treat a number of gastrointestinal, gynecological, and urological problems. Every Smart Dimensions™ surgeon has advanced training and extensive experience in laparoscopic bariatric surgery (weight loss) techniques. When you join the Smart Dimensions™ program, you are assured that your laparoscopic bariatric surgery procedure will be performed by a skilled professional who is dedicated to helping you achieve your weight loss goals. Revision Surgery for Failed Bariatric Surgery

Though weight loss surgery is typically safe and effective when performed by trained professionals like those at Smart Dimensions™, patients’ bodies sometimes do not respond well to surgery. This may lead to slowed weight loss and even weight regain. When bariatric patients are unable to lose weight, a revision procedure for failed bariatric surgery may be the best way to solve the problem. From converting gastric banding to a gastric bypass (or vice versa), our practice offers treatments to help patients address post-surgical complications and focus on their weight- and health-related goals.

Weight Loss

Diet Therapy

Before deciding on a laparoscopic method for weight loss, many of our obesity surgery patients from Los Angeles and around the world have tried some form of diet therapy. Diet therapy entails limiting caloric intake and increasing physical activity. Virtually without exception, physicians recommend avoiding fad or crash diets designed for maximal weight loss in a short period of time. While weight loss may be achieved, it is invariably temporary, and on the “rebound,” many patients actually increase their weight. Rather, physicians recommend limited caloric intake with a balanced diet, supplemented with low-intensity, low-impact exercise. If possible, diet therapy should be done under the supervision of an experienced dietician.

The Results

Unfortunately, this common-sense approach to treating obesity has not proven successful in most cases. In fact, there is only a 2 percent success rate for morbidly obese people who have Bariatric Surgery Before After Los Angeles Fountain Valley CAattempted diet therapy. We hear the frustration and disappointment in our patients’ voices when they describe their repeated failed attempts to lose weight through diet therapy. In contrast, we regularly witness the joy and relief our patients’ experience when they finally succeed in losing weight with laparoscopic bariatric surgery (weight loss). If you live in Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, or San Bernardino, we encourage you to make a personal visit to our Smart Dimensions™ clinic to see our facility and learn more about how we help patients overcome the health and social effects of obesity with laparoscopic bariatric surgery (obesity). Behavior Therapy

Behavior therapy is a part of most treatments for obesity, including the Smart Dimensions™ surgical weight loss program. Laparoscopic bariatric surgery (weight loss) at our Orange County practice is just one part of helping you succeed in creating a new, slim figure. To keep weight off, it is necessary to change your eating habits and your lifestyle significantly. We provide the support and guidance you need to change the amount and the types of food you eat. We teach you how to avoid “dangerous” situations in which you may be tempted to stray back to unhealthy habits and how to deal with “saboteurs” who, intentionally or unintentionally, try to get you to revert to old behaviors. At our regularly scheduled support meetings, we help you reinforce the behaviors of your new lifestyle so that you keep weight off and achieve your weight loss goals.

Drug Therapy

Drug therapy involves the use of prescribed medications that either act as an appetite suppressant (Phentermine, for example) or inhibit the absorption of dietary fat (Orlistat is one such medicine). They are typically prescribed as part of a comprehensive plan that includes diet therapy and behavior therapy.

Health food stores and supplement chains tout natural and herbal weight loss products and their “miracle” results. These should be avoided at all costs. They are usually not tested and can contain “natural” ingredients that can cause significant adverse side effects.

Drug therapy, though effective for some patients, has problems. Even prescription medications, especially fat blockers, have side effects that can cause noticeable discomfort. Patients usually must maintain a lifelong dependence on the drugs, and they must adhere to a regular schedule of taking their medication. In addition, pharmacological weight loss is typically recommended only for patients with a body mass index between 30 and 40. For patients with a BMI above 40, obesity surgery is advised.

If you or a loved one suffers from obesity, we may be able to provide effective treatment with laparoscopic bariatric surgery (weight loss). Contact our Orange County Smart Dimensions™ practice today to learn more about the procedures and services we offer.
