Frequently Asked Questions about LAP-BAND® Surgery

If you are considering LAP-BAND® surgery as a remedy to your obesity, you probably have a number of questions that need answers. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about LAP-BAND® surgery.

What is LAP-BAND® surgery?

LAP-BAND® surgery is a gastric banding surgery that creates a pouch in the stomach which restricts the amount of food intake, as a means to optimize weight loss.

Are there any requirements that must be met for me to get LAP-BAND® surgery?

There are a few requirements that will definitely have to be met. You must be over 18, and generally under the age of 55. You must be morbidly obese, and be at least 75 pounds overweight according to a standard height and weight chart, with a BMI (body mass index) of 40 or more.  Your health must be generally good, and you cannot suffer from any medical conditions which could cause complications with the surgery. Some doctors may require a psychological evaluation before the procedure, to determine that you are a good candidate for the weight loss surgery.

What risks are involved with getting a LAP-BAND® procedure?

LAP-BAND® surgery is really a quite safe procedure, but there is of course always some chance of a complication. One risk to LAP-BAND® surgery is a gastric perforation, where the wall of the stomach is torn. This however, is not a major issue, as it only occurs in approximately 1 percent of all procedures performed. There is also the risk of complication after surgery while the patient adjusts to having the LAP-BAND® in place, which can result in nausea and vomiting. In some cases, the band may slip and cause a blockage, which is why it is so important to be closely monitored after surgery.

How quickly will I begin to lose weight after the LAP-BAND® procedure?

You will immediately begin to see results after your LAP-BAND® surgery. For the first few weeks, rapid weight loss will occur from the liquid diet that you must remain on while your body adjusts to the band. Afterwards, you should see a steady decrease in weight providing you follow the instructions that the weight loss surgeon gives you on eating, and other lifestyle changes you will need to make.
