What is Restrictive Weight Loss Surgery?

Restrictive weight loss surgery is a procedure that helps patients achieve weight loss by reducing how much they can hold in their stomach. Having this type of surgery does not change how a person digests food. However, this surgery forces them to limit how much food they eat. This type of surgery does have risks as with any kind of surgery.

With restrictive weight loss surgery, there is a mental process involved. The patient has to change the way they think about food and how much they can eat. They must also incorporate exercise in their daily routine. A weight loss surgeon will help the patient devise a regime that, as long as it is properly followed, should help the patient to see weight loss results.

The procedure of restrictive weight loss surgery is performed as the surgeon cuts out a pouch from the upper portion of the stomach. This pouch will be able to hold up to 1 ounce of substance. This pouch will attach to the remaining part of the stomach.

Because of this, the patient will have to eat small portions up to 1 cup of food for each meal. They will have to eat slowly so that everything will digest properly.

There are different types of restrictive weight loss surgeries. The first one is called vertical banded gastroplasty, or stomach stapling. This procedure works to make sure that the patient is consuming smaller amounts of food which will allow the food to digest properly. This allows the patient to consume all of the vitamins and nutrients from the food. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery combines stomach stapling (restrictive methods) with malabsorptive techniques. This type of gastric bypass surgery is currently the most common weight loss surgery.

The second type of restrictive weight loss surgery is called laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding. This procedure involves the placement of a band on the stomach to make it smaller, instead of a bypass of part of the intestines. This method allows patients to get full quicker and to digest food properly. Although there are several gastric banding options available, the most common form of gastric banding is the LAP-BAND system.

In order for the patient to see results from any type of restrictive weight loss surgery, they will have to make adjustments to their lifestyle. Changes in eating habits and exercise routines will help the patients achieve long-term weight loss.
